Winter Harbor Marina Brewerton, NY, the PDQs Begin to Gather - Day 274

June 14, 2016
Day 274

We were up at 5:30 am and left the Sylvan Beach free dock at 6:00 am to cross Lake Oneida.  Lake Oneida is 20 miles long and three miles wide, and only about an average of 20 feet deep.  The length of the lake is East-West so with prevailing west winds the chop on the lake can become nasty and even treacherous if the wind speed is over 15 knots.  Picking a good day is imperative for a safe crossing.  The winds are typically calmer early in the morning and that was the case today.  The lake was very calm and we made the crossing in only an hour and 20 minutes.  Along the way we passed Veritas and several other boats that had left the dock earlier than we did for the calm morning crossing.

We pulled up to the Winter Harbor Marina before anyone was in for the day, so we just picked a spot on the wall and tied up.  I called the surveyor to let him know we were there and he could come an assess the damage for the insurance company of the boat who hit us in Cape May.  It's 4:15 pm as I write this and still no sign of the surveyor, so I don't know if we will be able to get the damage repaired while we are here, especially since we were a day later getting here than we expected.

In the meantime, PDQs had begun to gather.  Several had been stored there for the winter in anticipation of this rendezvous and flotilla.  On the dock are Building Our Wings, Heron, Traveler, and Vagabond.

Still "on the hard" are three other PDQs that had been stored there for the winter.  They will be launched over the next few days to join those on the wall and for the flotilla.
