Finally on the Water Again - Beaufort, NC - Day 16

Day 16
10/7/15

Even though we got back to the boat last Friday we were unable to go anywhere due to the storms, high winds, and record rainfall, as well as the high water at our marina.  Yesterday morning early the water had finally gone down just to the top of the dock so we were able to get off the boat and take ourselves and the dogs ashore.  Boy were they glad to finally be on solid ground with grass and trees - and squirrels!  Within a couple of hours the water began to rise again, so we called my brother David and sister-in-law Terri and they allowed us to spend the night at their house and use one of their cars for errands.

By this morning the water had subsided another 8-10 inches and predicted winds were light, so we hightailed it back to the boat, loaded up our supplies and got underway by midday.  We made the run to Beaufort, NC in about 3 1/2 hours.  As we left David reminded us not to say "BEWfort" to anyone in BOfort.  The cities have the same name in NC and SC but are pronounced differently.  Along the way, we passed some naval landing craft and once we cleared Adams Creek we began to see dolphins.

We docked at the Beaufort (BOfort) City Docks right in the heart of the small but quaint town.  We docked next to a 100 foot Hatteras mega yacht called Mr. Loui.  I think our boat could serve as its dinghy.

Unbelievably directly across the dock from us was a couple from Oban, Scotland, the town from which Sharon's McCaig ancestors hail.  They knew that Jake and Kimi were Border Terriers and of Scottish origin, and were quite familiar with McCaig's Tower (they called it McCaig's Folly) which is a major landmark in Oban and was built by Sharon's great grandfather.  It is pictured below:

We toured the small town of Beaufort (BOfort) by foot seeing a number of quaint older houses and an ancient "burying ground", a spooky place if I've ever seen one!

Then we ate dinner at the Dock House Resturant just steps from our dock and watched the sunset from the second-floor balcony.
