Waterford, NY at The Beginning of The Erie Canal - Day 268-269

 June 8-9, 2016
Day 268-269

We left Kingston, NY early in the morning due to storms that were predicted to start early in the afternoon and we wanted to be to our destination before the storms hit.

The Kingston, NY waterfront as we were leaving.

Many of the lighthouses on the Hudson are literally houses built on a rock with a light on the roof.  I suppose the lighthouse tenders lived there at one time.

Some pictures of "Building Our Wings" on the way up the Hudson River taken by fellow PDQ owner Duane Ising from "Diva Di".

We passed another PDQ, "Next Adventure", anchored out along the Hudson.  They are also headed to the PDQ Rendezvous in Brewerton, NY.

Another lighthouse.

Some of the skyline of Albany, NY.

This is the Troy Federal Lock, technically the first lock on the Erie Canal, but since it is owned and managed by the Federal government it's not considered part of the Erie Canal.  The first lock on the Erie Canal proper is Lock #2 just above Waterford, NY.

Locking through the Troy Lock.

The sailboat behind us in the lock had its mast removed.  Sailboats wishing to transit the Erie Canal must have their masts removed due to the numerous low fixed bridges along the canal.

When boats reach Waterford, NY there is a choice, left to the Erie Canal or right the Champlain Canal.  We went left.

A mule statue at the Waterford Visitor Center.  Originally barges were pulled along the canal by mules walking on a path beside the canal.

At Waterford, we walked across a bridge over the Hudson to a grocery store to reprovision for the next leg of our trip.  Waterford has a nice floating dock where you can tie up for two days for free.  If you want electricity it's $10.00 for the stay.  We stayed two days due to weather along with numerous other boats staging for the Erie and Champlain canals.
