Bobby's Fish Camp, AL - Day 370

September 18, 2016
Day 370

This morning before we left the Demopolis marina I called the Demopolis Lock, which was only three miles away, to see if we could lock through when we arrived.  The Lockmaster said he had a northbound tow on the way and estimated that we could lock down in about 45 minutes.  We got the boat ready and slowly motored down to the lock, arriving at the appointed time, and lo and behold the northbound tow was just pulling out of the lock so we could go right in.  This was our only lock of the day, so it was good to get through without delay.

At the Demopolis Lock there are about 40 resident white egrets that were sitting on the sides of the lock when we arrived.  They have apparently figured our that the lock will serve up a smorgasbord of egret delicacies when the water is let in  and out of the lock.  As the water went down an egret took up residence on each floating bollard and rode it down, swooping into the water to grab tasty morsels as they appeared.  Others stationed themselves at the gates and sills doing the same.  It was an interesting ride down!

Water flowing over a rock formation below the Demopolis dam.

After almost 100 miles for the day, we arrived at Bobby's Fish Camp which has a dock where a few boats can overnight and a restaurant, as well as rental cabins that the locals use to enjoy the river.  This night we were the only boat at the dock.

We had dinner at the restaurant, enjoying both the food and the ambiance.  Quite a unique experience!
