Day 371-372
We made a REALLY long run from Bobby's Fish Camp to Dog River Marina south of Mobile, a trip of 137 miles.
This is the Coffeeville Lock 2 miles from Bobby's Fish Camp. It was the last lock of our Great Loop and after completing this lock we were back in tidal water for the first time since June. On our entire trip from Virginia to Ft. Myers Beach and then back up the east coast and around the loop to Coffeeville we had negotiated 116 locks!
After miles and miles of fairly boring river with the occasional excitement of meeting a tow in a river bend, we finally entered Mobile Harbor where we had to stay at no wake speeds for several miles until we entered Mobile Bay.
We saw these Navy LCS ships that are built in Mobile. They are built of aluminum and are tri-hull ships designed for missions close to shore.
I think this was a convention center on the Mobile waterfront.
This was a huge catamaran that was also at the shipyard where the LCS boats were being built.
As came into the Dog River we saw our first pod of dolphins in months feeding under the bridge at the entrance to the river. We finally docked at Dog River Marina. When I called the marina to ask about docking arrangements I was told that in this part of the world they don't have fancy things like floating docks or cleats. The docks were built between large pilings and were a little difficult to fender, but we managed, and yes, there were no cleats.
While we were at Dog River Marina my brother Dave and his wife Terri joined us on the boat for a few days of cruising from Mobile to several places in the Florida panhandle.
