Day 360-362
While in our anchorages the last two nights, I had tried to run our generator to cool off the boat. Unfortunately, each night it only ran for 10 minutes before shutting itself down. I assumed it was overheating, but since there are no gauges for that engine I didn't know for sure. I made an appointment with a mechanic at our next stop, Green Turtle Bay Marina on Lake Barkley. We also needed the oil changed on our main engines, so I set that up as well. From our anchorage at the mouth of the Cumberland River, we made our way 31 miles p the Cumberland River to the Barkley Lock and Dam. This lock was one of the taller locks we had negotiated at 57 feet of lift. The picture showing a house boat emerging from the lock will give you an idea of its scale.
When we pulled into Green Turtle Bay just a couple of miles past the lock we found a number of other Loopers that we had met at other stops on the way around the loop. This is a popular Looper stop since it is the first marina and fuel stop since Hoppie's on the Mississippi 250 miles away. We got reacquainted with a number of friends and met some new ones, and then a group of twelve of us went out to a local restaurant called “Patti's” where they are known for their two-inch-thick pork chops. Of course, that is what I had and wound up taking half of it back to the boat because it was so large. Sharon had the one-inch pork chop so was able to finish hers.
We stayed at the Green Turtle Bay Marina until Sunday morning. In the meantime, we got our generator repaired, had the oil changed on the main engines, ate at two other local restaurants, and used the marina's courtesy car to re-provision at Walmart and to attend Mass on Saturday evening in a nearby town.
