Destin, FL - Day 374-375

September 22-23, 2016
Day 374-375

We left Pensacola and headed for Destin, a short day for us at 48 miles.  Along the way, we saw a lot of structures and activity for nearby Elgin Air Force Base.

Me navigating through a tight channel.

We pulled into Destin around lunch time and we were all surprised at the active and colorful waterfront.  We took a slip at the Harborwalk Marina, which was quite expensive but right in the middle of the boardwalk and all of the shops and activities there.

This Great Blue Haron hung around our dock all night.

This was a large magnolia tree that has been turned into a sculpture.

Sharon found these mummies/manikins while walking around during the day and had to take all of us back to see them that night.  We all thought we were on a wild goose chase until we finally found them.

Near the Destin waterfront is a large sand bar that many locals use as a swimming area.  Dave had seen it on the bus ride from Panama City to Mobile and really wanted to join the crowd.  He decided to rent a pontoon boat and we all went over and anchored with the locals and enjoyed an afternoon of swimming and enjoying the water.  We had lunch at one of the three floating restaurants anchored on the sand bar which is called "Crab Island".

Here is Building Our Wings docked in the middle of the Destin waterfront.  We had paid for one night on arrival, and the next day we told the manager we wanted to stay another night and he let us stay at no charge!  That made the high priced slip far more affordable, so everyone was happy.
